Remember our Veterans

Happy Veteran's Day!  Today is a special day to honor these brave men and women who went to war to defend our freedom.

This is a song from the WWI knitting drive, I have Great (Great?) Uncles on my Mom's side who served in this War.

And my Dad and four of his brothers served in WWII.  Amazingly they all returned home safe and sound.  One of my Uncles was even at Pearl Harbor the day it was bombed.

Wishing you all a special day.

Stark granite bluffs, fiery foliage, the sound of swiftly rushing, alternating currents, all under a crystal blue sky; this is my view and my inspiration for the On the Hudson cowl, my very first knitting pattern!

This cacophony of colors and textures spoke to me when I picked up my needles to begin this design.  I selected a beautiful mix of yarns, my Sandrasingh.com 1 Ply Merino Worsted, Malabrigo Merino Worsted and Cascade 220 Superwash and 220 Wool and stitch patterns that are reversible, so you can relax and enjoy wearing this cowl however you please.

Graphic Knitting with Laura Aylor
The moment I saw Laura Aylor's Jordan Point shawl I knew I was looking at a design my customers would have to have. Aylor's clean, modern aesthetic takes graphic knitting to an entirely new level and she has an eye for designing color blocked garments.

Jordan Point

Color Blocking is hot this season, its versatility is exciting.  The Oak Park scarf is just what your workday ordered, mix up your look with it layered over a tweed jacket for the office and use it to keep your weekend look sporty by layering it with jeans.

Oak Park
Aylor also has a line of Vests that are refined and tailored, flattering for many different figures.

Oberia
To introduce Laura she's agreed to do a Blog Giveaway!  3 lucky readers will win a Laura Aylor Pattern of their choosing!

Meet Laura Aylor: If 'knitting designer' had been one of the job choices for those aptitude tests they give you in high school, Laura says she wouldn't have spent so many years trying to decide what she wanted to be when she grew up. Her best subject in high school was math; her best classes in college were logic, drawing, and a commercial art class. After careers in computer programming/analysis and child-rearing, knit design snuck up on her, but she thinks it's the perfect use of her odd skill set. She loves every step of the process, from figuring out how to actually make what she’s envisioned to putting the finishing touches on a pattern, not to mention all the knitting that comes in between!

Instructions on how to enter this Giveaway are below, but first enjoy her entire collection.

All The Shades of Truth
All the Shades of Truth is a color-block stole inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. There is no intarsia, just picking up stitches from slipped stitch edges.

City Block
Cushy garter stitch and your favorite colors come together in the simple but interesting knit the City Block Shawl. Don’t worry – no intarsia! Just simple decreases and picking up stitches from slipped stitch edges – easy peasy!  Instructions are also included for a miniature version.

Derecho
Derecho is a triangular shawl knit modularly in two directions to produce a pattern of interconnected stripes. Two circular needles are used to knit on one side at a time while keeping the other side’s stitches live.

West Port Wrap
The Westport Wrap is a slightly asymmetrical triangle, knit from one side and decreasing down to a point.

Faberge'
The knitting techniques used for Faberge include: decreasing, horizontal braid, slipped stitches, beading. None of them are difficult, but some are a bit fiddly and any counting errors will show up, so it is not mindless knitting!

Cinnamon Toast
Cinnamon Toast is a large crescent-shaped shawl or shawlette/scarf worked from the top down with lots of texture. Perfect for a chilly fall afternoon at a football game or a trip to the local orchard for crisp apples and hot apple cider.

Enamored
The triangular shawl Enamored was knit from one skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light and then blocked moderately, but two skeins of Madelinetosh Pashmina also work beautifully!

Flame Nettle
The color work in the Flame Nettle cowl was inspired by a particularly lovely coleus plant. A lining hides the floats and makes it extra warm and cozy, but could be omitted if desired. Variegated yarns can be a lot of fun in this pattern!

Stella Luna
Knit from the top down the Stella Luna shawl uses a pattern of increases and decrease to achieve a bat-like shape.

Miss Potter
The Miss Potter shawl combines simple stockinette with a touch of texture and a deep garter ruffle. It is knit from the top down and can be knit with a straight top edge or with curving ends. The size of the shawl will depend on the amount of yarn you have as you knit to a certain point with half of your yarn.

Litchfield
The single-ply fingering weight yarn Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light knit on larger needles produces a lovely gauzy fabric that makes this a great summer shawl, Litchfield, perfect for a walk on the beach.

Merrywood Throw
The Merrywood Throw pattern works beautifully with a semi-solid or kettle dyed worsted or aran weight yarn. For a less-expensive option, use a workhorse yarn like Cascade 220

All Laura Aylor's patterns are sold as PDF downloads and the link to download each will appear after purchase.

The 3 winners will be announced on Nov. 15th. The patterns will be emailed to the winners as a PDFs.
