The Desmondus Socks

The Wilhelmina Shawlette was not Chrissy Gardiner's, of Gardiner Yarn Works, first foray into creating with Serendipitous Ewe's Fate Fingering yarn. A while back she created these unisex socks, Desmondus.

Named after the little grey vampire bat, the Desmondus Socks to be knit in Serendipitous Ewe's Fate Fingering sock yarn in the vampire inspired colorway Silver Shadows, a color in a series dyed exclusively for my website. Use one skein for a pair of women's socks and two skeins for men's. An unique cable pattern and lace insert are featured on these cuff down "His-and-Hers" socks for the night owl in your life.

What Would Madame Defarge Knit?

I have some very exciting news for you, I now carry Cooperative Press' new eBook, What Would Madame Defarge Knit? You may recall my November Newsletter discussed "One Size Fits All" projects just right for gifting and Sweaters. The timing of this new eBook couldn't be better, it features 21 original designs, 3 hats, 5 neck warmers, 3 shawls and a stole, 3 socks and a pair of slippers, a pair of mittens and gauntlets, a plush toy and 2 sweaters, in other words a project just right for gifting for the entire family!
Bertha's Mad, Mysterious Mobius by Erica Hernandez

Not So Ruby Slippers by Dawn Ellerd

What Would Madame Defarge Knit? marries the world of great literature to the craft of hand knitting. The 21 designs represent the work of 13 of the most respected knitwear artists in our industry, Brenda Dayne, Erica Hernandez of CraftLit, Gretchen Funk, Meg Warren owner of March Hare Yarns, Wendy McDonnell, Jen Minnis of Jen Minnis Artworks, Syne Mitchell of WeaveZine & WeaveCast, Hunter Hammersen author of Silk Road Socks, Dianne Read-Jackson, Chrissy Gardiner of Gardiner Yarn Works, Kathleen Rogers, Andi Smith of Knit Brit and Dawn Ellerd of Crochet Compulsive. The eBook is exciting and groundbreaking in a number of ways:

  • First, it relies on the internet for tutorials and photos. That’s partially because…
  • it’s in black and white—allied to the Dickensian theme—allowing Cooperative Press to print in the US, which in turn…
  • allows us to pay each designer a decent royalty rather than a tiny fee up front…
  • which means this is a totally new publishing model in the crafting world!
Cthulhu Waits by Hunter Hammersen

Hyde's Hooded Sweater by Gretchen Funk

What Would Madame Defarge Knit?
features knit and crochet patterns from sweaters to socks and lace shawls to cowls all inspired by characters from classic literature. From the “Jane’s Ubiquitous Shawl” to the “Cthulhu Waits” tentacle-wrapped sock, you're bound to find a pattern, or two or three, you'll want to cast on immediately!

Ms. Prynne by Kathleen Rogers

Frankenhood by Syne Mitchell

And our beloved Chrissy Gardiner of Gardiner Yarn Works contributed the Wilhelmina Shawlette pattern and its knit in Serendipitous Ewe's Fate Fingering yarn in a colorway that was hand dyed exclusively for Sandrasingh.com: Autumn Glow.

What would Mina, the heroine of Bram Stoker’s epic novel, Dracula, wear to protect her neck from the bloodthirsty count? As a practical girl, she undoubtedly would appreciate Gardiner Yarn Works' simple, delicate wool shawlette Wilhelmina, knit in only one skein Serendipitous Ewe's Fate Fingering yarn. Wilhelmina is the only pattern from the book that can be purchased separately and of course as a Kit, which is On Sale!

What Would Madame Defarge Knit? and the Wilhelmina Shawlette are PDFs and will be emailed to you after purchase, there are no shipping charges!

November 2011 Newsletter

As of today you have 52 days left to knit for Christmas and only 48 days to knit for Hanukah! Don't despair, I'm here with lots of "One Size Fits All" project ideas. And last week snow blanketed parts of the Northeast, making it officially "Sweater Weather!" Don't despair about this cold snap either, I have lovely new sweater designs to inspire and warm you!

In This Issue: "One Size Fits All" / "Sweater Weather" /

"One Size Fits All"
This time of year your favorite designers bring you a wealth of accessory patterns just right for gifting. And this gift giving season I have the pleasure of introducing you to two new designers, Robyn Gallimore of Red Bird Knits and Randi K of Randi K Designs! Robyn's new Eliza Shawl is a traditional Anatolian motif and Eliza Doolittle would have loved to have worn it on cool London mornings! Its designed to be knit in Kauni Effektgarn 8/2, this colorful triangular pattern is knit from the center back of the neck and makes beautiful use of the long color changes of Effektgarn. Robyn used color EQ and it is in stock.

Eliza Shawl

And Randi K is my second new designer! Her Summer Evening Shawl is knit in a sock weight yarn and the pale blue and off white of Picco Accuardi's hand painted Sneaker Wave colorway on their sock weight Acid and Weed will transform this shawl into the perfect wrap for a stroll through winter wonderland!

Summer Evening Shawl

Get more bang for your buck with Nelkin Designs new Iota Cowl and Scarf pattern, it features two designs and is written for three different weights of yarn! This pattern explores working the Iota Stitch both flat and in the round.

Iota Cowl

For the DK weight cowl the pattern calls for 1 skein of Schaefer's Chris, for the DK weight scarf it uses 2 skeins of Lorna’s Laces Honor and the fingering weight scarf uses only 1 skein of Schaefer Audrey. I have all three of these yarns in stock in many beautiful colors to choose from.

Iota Scarf

And jewelry makes a very personal gift for a very special person. Nelkin Designs' new Rippled is a lightweight lace ruffle to adorn your neck. It is constructed by ten rows of garter stitch with beads placed at intervals for pools of shine. Finished off with a fringe bead bind off and i-cords for easily adjustable length. You can quickly knit it in one evening and its available as a pattern and a Kit!

Rippled

"Sweater Weather"
Pullover and Cardigans are front and center at work and play this season and these talented knitwear artists offer you a fine selection sure to flatter every member of your family. Nelkin Designs' new Iota is a top-down seamless yoke pullover knit in Schaefer's soft Miss Priss yarn. It begins with the Iota Stitch worked around to create a mock turtle neck. The yoke grows as you work increases in between the stitch motifs and the rest of the sweater is then knit in reverse stockinette stitch with optional waist shaping and short or long sleeves.

Iota Sweater

Sivia Hardings' Harmonia’s Rings family now includes a Cowl, Tunic, and Sweater with three sleeve options that is knit in Madelinetosh Tosh Vintage! All begin with Cat Bordhi’s Moebius cast on, spiral the yoke, then continue with the Harmonia of your choice. The Collection includes the one-size-fits-all cowl, rewritten for greater clarity and with new suggestions for size and shape modifications; the tunic in seven sizes; and the sweater in seven sizes with three sleeve options. Or you can purchase each separately, Cowl, Tunic or Sweater.

Harmonia's Rings Sweater

Darling JOJI has designed another beautiful cardigan, this time the lacey Darling Emma. Emma is a seamless wrap style cardigan, with lace fronts, shawl collar and ties and knit in Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light!

Darling Emma

If a kimono is more your style you'll adore the sophistication of Dawn Brocco's new Kimono Fana Cardigan, it melds a traditional Fana sweater with a Japanese Kimono element. Dawn loves the simplicity of the kimono, which seems to want to blend with the simplicity of the Norwegian Fana motifs. Flattering color placement and a fitted waist make it very wearable and modern.

Kimono Fana Cardigan

Army of Knitters has an eye for detail, her new top down, raglan cardigan Cromarty features large scale lace and cables running down the center back to the waist with a grown-on, seed stitch belt that can either be tied in a large bow at the back or used to close the cardigan. Mirror image cables run down the fronts and continue on to the seed stitch trim. There are subtle godets that shape the body from the waist down where the back dips lower than the front with some short row shaping. The sleeves also have lace panels running down the center and the body is finished with a dramatically cabled collar.

Cromarty

And Nelkin Designs' Iota Capelet gives you another twist on the warm and cozy sweater, its a top-down seamless reverse stockinette stitch cape that incorporates increases into the vertical ribbing. It begins with the Iota Stitch worked in the round to create a cowl neck and then is worked down. It is easily modified to be longer and wider!

Iota Capelet

Keep the men in your life warm with one of these designs. Army of Knitters' Lochy was inspired by vintage cowichan cardigans, Lochy features the raglan sleeves, zip front and cozy rolled collar of a traditional cowichan with a little Scottish flavor by adding tartan to the sleeves and a ram’s skull to the back.

Lochy

Or a casual and comfortable pullover, Gardiner Yarn Works retro Men's Stripey Raglan pattern includes 5 sizes and is knit in the round for minimal finishing and Schaefer's Men's Textured Turtleneck is knit in 3-4 skeins of Schaefer's Nancy.

Men's Textured Tunic

Men's Stripey Raglan

And for the littlest member of your family Randi K Design's Baby Tyra cardigan is knit in the round in stunning colorwork and will become a beloved family heirloom. The pattern is sized to fit a 3-6 month old and includes charts and written instructions.
