New Colors & Save 10% on Sandrasingh.com Yarn

Since ringing in 2011 it's been very busy at Sandrasingh.com, besides adding new yarns & projects a HUGE shipment of my very own Sandrasingh.com Yarn has arrived. Over 50 new colors in my 1 Ply Merino Worsted and lots of new shades in my Superwash Fingering and Lace.

You may remember in May 2010 for my website's 5th Anniversary I introduced my own yarn collection. It all happened rather quickly, even though producing my own yarn line had been one of my goals since I opened in 2005. I knew when I touched my very first skein of merino wool, that this soft fiber was the one I wanted hand painted in custom colors. I was finally able to realize this dream when a fellow fiber enthusiast put me in touch with a family from Uruguay who had been working with Uruguayan Merino Sheep for nearly a decade. Upon sampling their 100% merino wool yarns I discovered they created some of the softest, most supple yarn available, all of a sudden my ambition took on a life of its own!

As some of the knitwear designers I work with, and I, began to knit the yarns we found that all four were smooth and produced finished fabrics with well defined stitch definition and lovely drape. They washed and blocked nicely, holding their desired shape and all were gentle enough to be worn next to the skin.

For many years this family has worked with local Uruguayan artisans to hand paint their fibers in stunning, brilliantly saturated colors. My line of colorways includes some of the most unique semi solid and variegated hues available. I'm proud to offer you a lace, superwash fingering, 1 & 3 ply worsted, all crafted of 100% Uruguayan Merino Wool and put up in very generous skeins.

Superwash Fingering

Discover your inner sock knitter with my Superwash Fingering. Sumptuously soft with a slight halo, you'll adore knitting and wearing the socks you create with it. But why stop at socks? Since its a superwash with 440 yards let your imagination run wild.

Lace

If you're a lace knitting enthusiast you'll love creating with my Lace weight, each hank has 950 yards making your shawls, stoles and other lace projects a dream to knit, with fewer ends to weave!
3 Ply Merino Worsted

Realize your creativity with my 3 Ply Merino Worsted, this velvety smooth yarn has a light, even twist.

1 Ply Merino Worsted

Buttery soft and gentle to the touch your every garment will be a dream to knit up and wear in my 1 Ply Merino Worsted. With 215 yards per skein, one skein is all you need for a plush hat or cowl and its now available in sweater quantities.

Frillery

A few of the knitwear artists I work with designed some beautiful garments for my yarn! Renee Leverington of "Goddess Knits" created the Frillery Shawl in my Lace and the Ribbon Taffy Socks in Superwash Fingering.

Sookie

And working with my 1 Ply Merino Worsted Michelle Miller of "Fickleknitter Designs" created the hat, cowl and fingerless mitts set Sookie.

And soon to be released a hoodie scarf design in my 1 Ply Merino Worsted and a filigree scarf in my Lace.

For the next three days, all of my yarns are 10% Off, sale ends 1/28/11.

Nelkin Designs & the Beaded Cuff Kit Giveaway

Knittingdancer Congratulations you were selected as our winner!

Lately there's been a flurry of activity at Sandrasingh.com and that's just the way I like it. I've been busy bringing you new yarn brands, such as Kauni's Effektgarn, plus stocking up on some of your favorites like Madelinetosh, Malabrigo, Sandrasingh.com and The Schaefer Yarn Co. I've also been having fun hosting Blog Giveaways, and this post will include one too.

You may have noticed the recent explosion of new knit & crochet patterns, lots of beautiful new designs by some of your favorite artists
and that I've introduced the work of 6 new talented knitwear designers. You know I usually like to take a moment to shine a spotlight on my new designers and introduce them to you on a first name basis, but there hasn't been time to single any one of them out. Starting with this post I'm going remedy that!

Laura Nelkin

Introducing Laura Nelkin of Nelkin Designs! I've had the pleasure of working with Laura for the past few years since she became the Design Director at The Schaefer Yarn Co. I've admired her work the entire time and Schaefer's projects are some of the most popular among my customers and of course Laura influences the line. So it was the perfect fit to add her pattern collection to my website to make it available for you.

Undulating Waves in Schaefer Susan

Laura designs, almost, exclusively in Schaefer's yarns and specializes in beaded knitwear, you may be familiar with her graceful beaded Undulating Waves scarves from Schaefer. But she's also a superb lace, jewelry and sock designer and since she resides in upstate New York her collection caters to knits that will keep you and your family warm this winter.

With her eye for fashion and insiders knowledge of the yarn industry I thought it would be interesting to learn what secrets Laura knows, she graciously agreed to answer a few questions for you. And she generously donated a gift for the giveaway, her Beaded Cuff Kit complete with the yarn, beads and pattern, details on how to enter below.

Beaded Cuffs

Hello Laura, please tell us about yourself and what got you interested in knitting and designing knitwear.

I actually didn’t learn to knit until 2004. I graduated from Cornell in the mid 90’s with a degree in Apparel Design. I managed to convince my professors to allow to me focus on dyeing and weaving for my concentration and spend many hours at the loom creating fabric for my looks. I tried to learn how to knit during this time and it just never “took”! Fast forward to 2004, I was with my daughter (who was then 4) at a playdate and her friend’s mom decided to teach me how to knit. Suffice it to say, I sold my looms the next year and haven’t looked back. I LOVE the portability of knitting. I think I always felt trapped at my looms … my knitting and I can go anywhere! Though I followed patterns in the beginning I quickly found that I was constantly trying to create things in my mind and then recreate them on the needles. Since I did not take any formal knitting classes as I was learning I didn’t have any rules I was worried I would break! This allows me to create stitches and techniques… because I just don’t know any better!

Who or what inspires you the most in your design process?

Ahh, inspiration… I pretty much never know when it is going to strike me… but often times it does while I am knitting on a current design! Once I finish the sketching/swatching step my designs are pretty much fleshed out. What this means is that my mind is left to wander while I knit. I constantly take notes of ideas as I will forget them by the time I remember I had one I wanted to follow up on. This means there are little doodles everywhere on the patterns I am working on. My family is quite active, we bike, x/c ski, hike depending on the season. I often come home from a session invigorated and all jazzed up with a new concept. My biggest challenge is to learn to finish the ideas I have already started and then edit the ones I have percolating to make sure they are worth my effort. Sometimes I wish I had an off switch for this part of my brain, as it can be rather distracting!

What direction do you see yourself heading in as a designer?

Well this relates directly back to all those ideas I keep having, right? I have a few big concepts that are “gelling” into a plan. I just have a bit more research to do to understand how I am going to move forward with them most effectively. One of the ideas involves a project with a few other designers. I relish the idea of collaboration with them!

How have the advances in technology and the internet helped you (or hindered) you as a knitwear designer?

I am really excited about how the publishing industry is rapidly changing; the idea of dynamic e-books that imbed photos, links, tutorials, and videos is unbelievably thrilling to me. I can’t wait to see how other designers (and myself) develop their patterns to push the boundaries of the publishing industry. I also REALLY appreciate the role social media has played in my creativity and design community development. So much of what we do as designers is solo. Interfaces like Raverly, Twitter and Facebook allow me to share myself day to day with like minded knitters and designers. They become my office “water cooler” a place to chat, vent, learn, and find new things to cook for dinner!

You're not only an independent knitwear artist but also the Design Director at The Schaefer Yarn Company, with all this inside knowledge of the yarn industry what direction do you see fiber arts heading in the next five years?

I do see a big trend towards more yarns that are sourced/milled/designed and produced in their own countries. Right now most fibers come from one country, they are processed in another country, then shipped to another country to be milled, possibly even dyed somewhere else, and then shipped to the manufacturer who finishes the packaging and transports them onto their final destination. That’s a lot of traveling for a skein of yarn!

The end user (i.e. the knitter) is also a much more educated consumer than they were 5 years ago. The comfort level in substituting yarns, exploring different fiber contents, and the understanding of how colors and dye techniques are going to affect their final garment has exploded. Manufacturers are challenged to continue to develop BOTH fibers and techniques that will inspire knitters to continue to stretch themselves. This is not an industry that allows you to ride on your laurels… constant research and development is a must! (and the best part, IMHO… I absolutely LOVE working on the NEW!)

Laura thank you so much for taking the time to talk to with us, it was a pleasure getting to know you.

From pullovers to beaded shawls and everything in between, please visit my site to see Laura's entire collection.

"Sweater Girl"

Picture the image this iconic phrase conjures up, the fitted pullover accentuating the bust line with a cardigan casually draped over the shoulders worn by a Hollywood starlet or pinup girl. Celebrate your inner "Sweater Girl" with one of these updated classics.

Cardigans
A beautiful hand knit cardigan is a wardrobe staple and Kirsten Kapur of Through The Loops & Heather Dixon of Army of Knitters bring you a wealth of styles you can dress up or down to suite your needs and flatter your figure.

Washington Square

Play with cables, Kirsten's new cabled and ribbed Washington Square is knit in The Schaefer Yarn Company's 100% merino wool yarn Miss Priss. Washington is worked flat in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms with a 3x1 rib that gives a bit of contour to the body without shaping. The sleeves are worked in the round and joined to the body at the yoke. Simple slipped stitch ovals begin the yoke, with a ridge stitch completing it. Finishing work is quick and soon this comfortable piece will be your "go to" cardi!

Save on Miss Priss - 10% Off per skein & 15% Off a dyeloted bag of 6. Washington is shown in the semi solid Thistle and many of Schaefer's Memorable Women colorways are in stock and all can be special ordered.

Howlite

Enjoy your knitting with these four cardi designs by Heather, but enjoy the compliments you'll receive when wearing one even more! Howlite puts a new twist on the time-honored cabled cardi, its a very knittable and wearable adaptation of an Oscar de la Renta design featuring a mix of cables and seed stitch. It sports a lacy collar and cuffs and is worked as flat pieces and seamed together.

Howlite

Rhubarb & Custard

While the contrast of chunky cables and large-scale lace play happily together in Heather's Rhubarb & Custard sleeveless cardi. A wonderful layering piece that can be worn either, open or tied with an i-cord belt.

Nougat

And if you want to play with cables, lace and stripes in one cardigan project cast on for Nougat. Totally seamless, worked from the top down with set in sleeves, its an elegant deep V-neck cardigan.

Chambord Truffle

And both cozy and elegant, the seamless Chambord Truffle cardigan features interestingly textured bands of beaded silk which add color and sparkle to its long and slender silhouette.

Pullovers
Every sweater girl needs a little fitted top and Laura Nelkin of Nelkin Designs pays tribute to two modern Sweater Girls with these designs.

Jamie Lee

Jamie Lee was inspired by the sexy mock t-neck tops Jamie Lee Curtis wore in the 80's. Its a fitted tank, with a lacy ribbing at the hem and neckline, waist shaping and a shell lace panel traveling up each side. The lace pattern is interesting and the body knits up fast, you'll have Lee finished in no time at all.

Janet Leigh

While Janet Leigh is a more demure, less revealing version. Its a fitted seamless shell with similar lacy ribbing at the hem and neckline, a shell lace panel on each side and waist shaping but it also features raglan cap sleeves and is an 1.5" longer than Jamie Lee.

Malachite

Stand out in a crowd, but be warm and cozy at the same time with one of these new pullover designs by Heather Dixon. Fitted with a dash of brilliance Malachite is a very wearable sweater featuring sequined shoulders and stripes for a bit of everyday sparkle. Its completely seamless and knit from the top down with saddle shoulder, set in sleeves. Malachite hugs the curves in all the right places.

Parfait

For a little lengthier pullover knit Parfait, its a tunic length sweater knit in a beautiful lace stitch featuring a modest V neck which can be worn at the front or back. It has Biba-esque sleeves knit down from the dropped shoulders, making Parfait a completely seamless knit.

Pumpkin Pie

And if you're after a relaxed fitting sweater, but still desire a little sex appeal, gorgeously soft Pumpkin Pie is worked in one piece from cuff to cuff. A double cable runs up the first sleeve, divides at the neck opening, then joins together again to proceed down the second sleeve. Heather strategically used dropped stitches on both sides of the cable to create more textural interest and reveal a glimpse of skin.

Visit Cardigans & Pullovers to see all the styles available on my website.

And Madelinetosh Tosh DK is a great machine washable DK weight yarn perfect for cardi and pullover projects and its also On Sale. Have you seen the latest Knitty, Winter 2011? Tosh DK is the yarn used in the new free cardigan pattern "Turn of the Glass" available in this new edition.

Washington Square

Its sweater season, unleash your inner "Sweater Girl" and celebrate with this new cabled cardi design by Kirsten Kapur of Through The Loops.

Washington Square

Kirsten Kapur shares the story of her Washington Square Cardigan..."From the moment I sewed the last button onto Washington Square in October (in the car on the way to Rhinebeck) it has become part of my uniform. I think I've worn this cardigan more than any other sweater I've made. The yarn, Schaefer Miss Priss, has a combination of warmth and softness that makes it perfect from October through April here in NJ. In the photo above I'm wearing it with a short sleeved tshirt in October. There is no itchiness, I assure you. The color, Thistle, is a lovely muted violet that seems to look good with most of my wardrobe."

"It's fun to see how the same sweater works on me with zero ease and on Sofie (Kirsten daughter) with about 5" of ease. I think it's the ribbing that makes Washington Square work for both of us. The 3x1 ribbing gives a bit of contour to the body without the addition of actual body shaping in the pattern."

Washington Square is worked flat, in one piece from the bottom up to the underarms. The sleeves are then worked in the round and joined to the body at the yoke. Simple slipped stitch ovals begin the yoke, with a ridge stitch completing the yoke. Finishing work is quick with only button bands added and small openings at the underarms that are stitched closed.

Luxurious New Yarns
Four new yarns grace the shelves at Sandrasingh.com, a long time favorite Kauni Effektgarn has returned, Karabella and Madelinetosh bring you two new DK weights ideal for your seasonless outerwear while Malabrigo introduces a quick to knit bulky soft enough to wear next to your skin.

Ilga Leja Northern Lights

Pullovers & Cardigans
The upside to the ice and snow that's recently been blanketing most of the country, and world, is that you now get to enjoy creating and wearing hand knit sweaters. Inspired by the aurora borealis, Ilga Leja's jacket/cardi Northern Lights features a sideways construction with a stitch pattern that will show off either a variegated or solid color yarn with equal flair.

Combing style with warmth a pullover is right for any occasion. Onyx by one of the latest designers to join Sandrasingh.com an Army of Knitters, is a playful mix of weight and texture. A completely seamless sweater, worked top-down with set-in, slightly puffed sleeves. The lower body and sleeves are worked on smaller needles in rib with simple cables and the corset inspired shaping accentuates an hourglass figure.

Nelkin Designs' Cascabel

Another new knitwear designer is Laura Nelkin of Nelkin Designs, her two new pullovers are perfect for any outdoor activity you have in mind. Snuggler is a cozy hoodie with a slight cowl neck, its worked in Schaefer's sport weight yarns Susan or Heather. Cascabel is a spicy seamless yoke sweater with little chili peppers around the neck knit in Schaefer's worsted Miss Priss! Worked from the bottom up, the pattern starts with the sleeves and there is subtle waist shaping at the "princess" seams to allow for a fitted look.

Or if you're ready for a challenge Fickleknitter's Silk Rhapsody Scarf is a spicy little lace project with knit and purl stitches worked through the back loop every row, purl and knit side yarn overs every row, and p2togs through the back loop every other row.

Goddess Knits' Mandala II

Nelkin Designs' Centrino

Laura Nelkin plays with continuous shapes with her new circular shawl, moebius wrap and cowl designs. Circular Centrino is like a giant doily and based on vintage lace. There's a certain lure to begin something that starts out quite small and grows into an abundant orb, Centrino is addictive from start to finish and its knit in Schaefer's Anne, which is on sale.

Circulate
is a garter stitch lace moebius wrap in two sizes and knit in one skein of Schaefer's Heather. You'll use and conquer many knitting skills while working this pattern, including chart reading, provisional cast-on, knitting with beads, grafting and a beaded attached i-cord.

Nelkin Designs' Listado Cowl

The Listado Cowl is also knit in Heather and sized two ways, as a little neck warmer or an elegant whole head covering; either way this is a fast and simple ribbed lace cowl worked entirely in the round.

While crocherters will love Josefina Knits' new Hydrangea shawl, named after the designer's tiny garden

Josefina Knits' Hydrangea

And of course Socks
Choose from sexy thigh-highs or traditional anklets both of these patterns use classic cables to their advantage.
