Sock by Shibui is quite simply the perfect sock yarn. Spun from a superfine 19.5 micron merino superwash wool, its hard wearing, machine washable and ultra soft. But why limit yourself? Versatile Sock also knits and crochets into lovely shawls, hats and even jewelry!

Susan Lawrence, of Knitting As Fast As I Can, found Sock to be irresistible and designed her new crescent-shaped scarf Fog Lifter for this lovely hand-dyed yarn.

Susan's scarf is worked from the nape of the neck down to the bottom edge and the crescent shape sits securely around your shoulders. The all-over eyelet pattern is easily memorized because every row is knit, the right and the wrong sides are equally attractive. The crochet edging is an easy-to-work chain stitch, but you can substitute a knitted picot bind off if you prefer.

Ivete Tecedor of Chiagu thinks Sock is tops and her unisex hat design, the Super Simple Slouch (aka the S3 Hat!), proves it! Holding two strands together gives the S3 a nice drape while still keeping the hat cushy and warm and it also plays up the modern slouchy fit that’s everywhere on the streets and runways these days.

And Laura Nelkin of Nelkin Designs takes Sock in an altogether different direction! Beignet is a beaded i-cord necklace which explores the elegant simplicity of knitted jewelry. Worked from the bottom up, the cast on is wrapped around the donut integrating it seamlessly into the design.

Seems Mother Nature & Old Man Winter are going to make the next 3 months very harsh! Designers, Kirsten Kapur of Through The Loops and Ruth aka Woolly Wormhead have your well being, and time, in mind with these new hat projects that are quick enough to knit in a single weekend.

Slouchy hats remain popular and for good reason, beside being flattering the extra slouch on top traps warm air keeping you extra comfortable in frigid temperatures. Give a slouchy hat a special twist with lots of lace with Through The Loops' Asteroidea! The six row stitch pattern in a combination of cables and lace ensures that the knitting is fun. The patterns come together at the top to create a six pointed star.

2 Designers Add a Modern Twist toTraditional Lace

I've always admired how HeartStrings FiberArts designer Jackie Erickson-Schweitzer marries traditional beauty with practicality in her lace designs. Her lace garments, the Pianissimo Lace Blouse and Put on the Glitz Shrug exemplify this talent, both are classic pieces designed with traditional stitch work that can be dressed up or made more casual by how you style them and their both very practical layering pieces that can change the entire look of your outfit by simply slipping them on.

Erickson-Schweitzer's most recent lace design also strikes this balance, her Terzetto Lace Mitts are elegant, yet warm and wearable. They're named for the threesome of lace stitch patterns used in their design, this trio of stitches will sing to you while knitting and wearing these Victorian style gloves.

On a special note Terzetto is the musical term "a trio for instruments or voices," a little known fact, Jackie is an accomplished pianist who started to play at a very young age!

Another lace designer I admire is Kirsten Kapur of Through The Loops, but I admire her work for an entirely different reason. Mother of two teenage daughters Kapur's lace designs are always trendy, but never over the top, updated classics that her teen girls and she enjoy wearing for years, not just a single season. Kapur's latest design is the two color shawl, Ziggity. Shaped with 2 increases on every row, the top edge curves slightly up at the center back to give added protection to the neck and the bottom edge has a gentle curve which may be blocked to soft points or with a straight edge.

The combination of complimentary colors gives this stitch pattern and shape a freshness. Knit in a sock weight try two constrasting shades of Malabrigo Sock or Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light, one skein per for the MC and CC. Than, toss Ziggity casually around your neck like a scarf, drape it over your shoulders as a shawl or even wrap it multiple times around your neck with the ends tucked under as a cowl. You'll enjoy experimenting with this modern classic.

Though it was sad to say goodbye to 2011 I was very happy to welcome 2012. My oldest nephew tied the knot and with any luck I'll soon be a Great Aunt.

Did you make any New Year Resolutions for this new year? If you're anything like me you did, to eat healthier, exercise more including getting my dog to exercise more! And teach some one to knit. If you read this blog than you know at Thanksgiving I spent time with my family and I did teach quite a few of my cousins how to knit. But I'd like to continue this tradition.

Every girl in your circle of family and friends will fall in love with one of JOJI's new cardigan designs, Girly and the Grown up Girl. Isabella features an easy to knit, yet sophisticated stitch design that suits a wide variety of personal tastes and styles. By changing the color scheme the set, or individual pieces, will look great with many different types of outwear and work for children, teens and adults.

Its knit in a simple pattern with a stunning result. The color work at the borders of each piece is deceptively simple, there is no carrying two colors in the same row. As for me, I was thankful, and still am, for the wonderful family I have...

This year DH and I drove to Youngstown, Ohio to celebrate Thanksgiving with all of my cousins. As usual they're a lot of fun, no matter the occasion. After eating our delicious turkey feast and hiking to the historic "Indian Grave," we came home and settled in my Cousin Mary's living room for a knitting lesson.

Fortunately my cousin Zoe is already a knitter and she was lots help, I don't think I could have done it without her!

This is Cleo and Allison mastering the knit stitch! I'm so proud of them, they stuck with it and now want to venture out and try knitting some scarves on their own!

I was equally impressed with Carol, Cousin Mary and Marie! Actually Carol and Marie had both knit before and it quickly come back to them. And Cousin Mary was picking it up...

Here I am giving Cousin Mary a private lesson. Sadly I don't have any pictures of Jessica knitting, she was equally impressive and with a little help from her daughter Zoe she mastered the knit stitch.

The second part of our Thanksgiving trip involved a weekend in Washington DC to see my cousin Cleo dance in the Nutcracker, she was a Little Butterfly this year and was simply wonderful.

And I also learned how to dance to some video game....

Zoe is showing me the finer points, she won!

But I'm not looking to shabby!

Day and night I'm on a quest to bring you new yarns and patterns, its second nature to me. I love this hunt, often times a customer will bring me a lead, a very special designer or yarn they've fallen in love with. Or I'll be browsing Ravelry and discover a popular designer that I've not heard of as of yet, that's exactly what happened with Randi K of Randi K Designs.

I found one of her stranded mitten patterns, Emilia, and was immediately impressed. This intricate design was knit in the humble, workhorse yarn Cascade 220 Wool. And Randi's eye for color is expert, the mix of light green with purple and blue was beautiful. And I especially loved the way she ribbed the wrist to cinch it, adding extra warmth, a thoughtful, relatively simple detail that you may not even appreciate until a cold winter day.

Randi is originally from Norway, but she now resides of all places in Houston, TX! She is from a long line of knitters and has learned at the hands of masters. Randi incorporates many traditional Norwegian knitting techniques and motifs passed down to her from her mother and grandmother, including her phenomenal color combinations. But she does so in a way that the knitter can share her heritage.

Now let's meet Randi K...

"I was born and raised on the Southwest coast of Norway. Knitting is a part of the culture, and due to a colder climate, knitted clothing is a necessity. My grandmother had 9 children to dress, and she would spin, knit, weave and sew, to keep them warm. If she went to get the mail or to visit with a neighbor, I was told that she would keep a ball of yarn in the pocket of her apron, and knit as she walked. She worked hard and couldn't waist the time.

My mother was taught well and kept the tradition going. She made clothes for all of us children, and having experienced World War II, surviving on very little, she got to be pretty creative, remaking new clothing out of old. I loved to watch her sew, draw and paint. She inspired me, and she taught me a lot of things.

As a little girl I loved knitting doll clothes, and my mother would give me all her remnant yarn. I wound them into little balls, and kept them in a bag, my treasure. Later on, being a mother myself, I made most all my children's clothing, especially when they where young. I couldn't always afford buying them new clothes for all occasions, and knitting and sewing was fun. The knitting needles were especially busy during the winter months.

My education is in Graphic Design and before moving to the US in 1997 I worked with advertising in Norway. The need for creating never ends. but the fields can change... Pencil drawing, water coloring, sewing, quilting and knitting have all been my passions. Knitting is where I escape to relax, simultaneously creating and writing new patterns. The step from Graphic Design is small, as it's all shapes and colors to me.

Inspiration can come from colors, nice yarn, from nature and happenings. In the past I had often made my own one of a kind clothing, but never really thought of writing it as a pattern for others to follow. A few years ago my sister had breast cancer and I made the Helene mittens in her name, and wanted the income from that specific pattern to go towards cancer research. That was the beginning of many mitten patterns, although people often wonder how I can make mittens, living in Texas. Well, I do. Maybe its a connection to my roots."

The Wilhelmina Shawlette was not Chrissy Gardiner's, of Gardiner Yarn Works, first foray into creating with Serendipitous Ewe's Fate Fingering yarn. A while back she created these unisex socks, Desmondus.

Named after the little grey vampire bat, the Desmondus Socks to be knit in Serendipitous Ewe's Fate Fingering sock yarn in the vampire inspired colorway Silver Shadows, a color in a series dyed exclusively for my website. Use one skein for a pair of women's socks and two skeins for men's. An unique cable pattern and lace insert are featured on these cuff down "His-and-Hers" socks for the night owl in your life.

The cable and lace patterns are both charted and written plus Chrissy includes instructions for two techniques for turning the heel and for the Kitchener Stitch.

As of today you have 52 days left to knit for Christmas and only 48 days to knit for Hanukah! Don't despair, I'm here with lots of "One Size Fits All" project ideas. And last week snow blanketed parts of the Northeast, making it officially "Sweater Weather!" Don't despair about this cold snap either, I have lovely new sweater designs to inspire and warm you!

This time of year your favorite designers bring you a wealth of accessory patterns just right for gifting. And this gift giving season I have the pleasure of introducing you to two new designers, Robyn Gallimore of Red Bird Knits and Randi K of Randi K Designs! Robyn's new Eliza Shawl is a traditional Anatolian motif and Eliza Doolittle would have loved to have worn it on cool London mornings! Its designed to be knit in Kauni Effektgarn 8/2, this colorful triangular pattern is knit from the center back of the neck and makes beautiful use of the long color changes of Effektgarn. Robyn used color EQ and it is in stock.

Get more bang for your buck with Nelkin Designs new Iota Cowl and Scarf pattern, it features two designs and is written for three different weights of yarn! This pattern explores working the Iota Stitch both flat and in the round.

Pullover and Cardigans are front and center at work and play this season and these talented knitwear artists offer you a fine selection sure to flatter every member of your family. Nelkin Designs' new Iota is a top-down seamless yoke pullover knit in Schaefer's soft Miss Priss yarn. It begins with the Iota Stitch worked around to create a mock turtle neck. The yoke grows as you work increases in between the stitch motifs and the rest of the sweater is then knit in reverse stockinette stitch with optional waist shaping and short or long sleeves.

Dawn loves the simplicity of the kimono, which seems to want to blend with the simplicity of the Norwegian Fana motifs. Flattering color placement and a fitted waist make it very wearable and modern.

Army of Knitters has an eye for detail, her new top down, raglan cardigan Cromarty features large scale lace and cables running down the center back to the waist with a grown-on, seed stitch belt that can either be tied in a large bow at the back or used to close the cardigan. Mirror image cables run down the fronts and continue on to the seed stitch trim. There are subtle godets that shape the body from the waist down where the back dips lower than the front with some short row shaping. The sleeves also have lace panels running down the center and the body is finished with a dramatically cabled collar.

And Nelkin Designs' Iota Capelet gives you another twist on the warm and cozy sweater, its a top-down seamless reverse stockinette stitch cape that incorporates increases into the vertical ribbing. It begins with the Iota Stitch worked in the round to create a cowl neck and then is worked down. It is easily modified to be longer and wider!

Army of Knitters' Lochy was inspired by vintage cowichan cardigans, Lochy features the raglan sleeves, zip front and cozy rolled collar of a traditional cowichan with a little Scottish flavor by adding tartan to the sleeves and a ram’s skull to the back.

Tiny Owl Knits' Mr Fox Stole my Heart & Mini Fox

A fur stole has always had a special place in fashion. A sign of wealth and luxury, but more affordable than a full length coat or even a capelet and of course oh so warm! I have a fox stole that was given to me by my mom, that was worn by her mother. But if the idea of wearing real fur doesn't appeal to you, and since you're a knitter, you are still in luck!

Mr Fox Stole my Heart & Mini Fox

Stephanie Dosen's timing is amazing, though I doubt she planned it this way! She just introduced her new Mr Fox Stole my Heart & Mini Fox stole pattern to coincide with our interview and blog giveaway for three of her patterns (see the post below)!

Mr Fox is a cheeky little guy! And the pattern includes a mini fox too, thus the name, Mr Fox Stole my Heart & Mini Fox. The head and body are knit in one piece and the legs and tail are picked up and knit down. And the eyes are nicely set in by pulling the thread very tightly when you attach them, detailed instructions are given.
